On March 23, 2019, representatives from the judiciary and politics met as part of the Annual General Meeting of the German Federal Association of Interpreters and Translators (Baden-Württemberg State Association) for a panel discussion to discuss the role of court interpreters in legal proceedings.
The course and results of the panel discussion exceeded even the board’s boldest expectations.
Attorney Martin Stirnweiss appeared as a representative of the legal profession and pointed out the need for court interpreting to take cultural connotations into account as well—beyond mere language proficiency—and spoke about interpreting and translation cases he had personally experienced in his courtroom practice that had had consequences for the entire proceedings.
