In April 2024, an extensive trial began at the Bamberg Regional Court against 16 defendants from the Netherlands and Belgium, who are accused of blowing up numerous ATMs in Germany and stealing millions of euros. Due to the high number of participants and the logistical effort involved, the proceedings were moved to a Federal Police sports hall. The perpetrators are alleged to have practiced breaking open ATMs in a specially established “explosives school.” In July 2024, 13 of the 16 defendants reached a plea deal with the judiciary, leading to a shortening of the proceedings.
