A sensational trial is currently underway before the Stuttgart Regional Court against seven defendants suspected of having smuggled drugs into Stammheim Prison – disguised as alleged legal correspondence. Synthetic cannabinoids were applied to paper and sent using forged letterheads from law firms, including those with connections to lawyers from the Stuttgart region.
At the heart of the proceedings is a trio of brothers who, according to the public prosecutor’s office, are involved in a network of organized crime surrounding the Zuffenhausen/Göppingen group. The 27-year-old brother is alleged to have coordinated drug trafficking from prison, supported by his 29-year-old brother, who hoped to gain higher status within the scene through his role. The latter is also accused of possessing a loaded firearm.
The judiciary anticipates severe penalties: the main defendant faces up to ten years and eight months in prison if convicted. The co-defendants also face multi-year prison sentences. The case not only reveals criminal ingenuity but also the susceptibility to abuse of legal communication channels – and sends a clear signal about the increasing importance of technical controls in correctional facilities.
